What is a dental veneer?

Dental veneers are custom-made, thin pieces of porcelain placed over existing teeth to recreate the natural look of your teeth and enhance your smile.

These wafer-thin shells cover the front of your teeth, which can change their color, shape, length, and size, allowing you to completely customize your smile. In addition, porcelain veneers are extremely stain-resistant and have the appearance of natural teeth.

Many people get veneers for a multitude of reasons, ranging from:

  • Filling gaps between teeth
  • Covering fractured teeth
  • Fixing teeth that don’t respond well to tooth whitening or bleaching
  • Fixing the shape or contour of your teeth

Because veneers aren’t a good option for everyone, Dr. Aulakh discusses with you your reasons for getting them before you commit.

What is involved in getting dental veneers?

It’s important to understand that once your tooth is prepared for a veneer, the process isn’t reversible. Because of this, Dr. Aulakh takes her time in explaining the procedure and making sure you understand the process.

Dr. Aulakh first takes X-rays and molds of your teeth. She then prepares your tooth for the veneer.

In order to do this, she removes roughly a half millimeter of your enamel in order to make room for the veneer. If need be, Dr. Aulakh can use local anesthesia to numb the area so you can be comfortable with the procedure.

The next step is to make sure the veneer is going to fit properly. Finally, Dr. Aulakh bonds the veneer to your tooth.

What can I expect after getting a dental veneer?

In order to make sure your veneers last, Dr. Aulakh recommends you take care of them the same way you would your natural teeth, meaning you should floss, brush, and go to regular dental checkups.

Additionally, avoid nail-biting, teeth grinding, and any other activity that could crack or chip your veneers. Doing this consistently can help your veneers last for up to 10 years, if not more.
